Denis Chiasson
Artist's Statement:
Some of my sculptures are made from a combination of found natural objects and hand-made elements. In others, I sculpt grasses bound with wax. The finished piece is cast in bronze using the lost wax, or "lost grass" method. I make my drawings by manipulating grasses over a horizontal sheet of paper, while at the same time spraying pigments around and through the grass. When the grass strands are removed, they leave behind a ghost image, a flat registration of a former three-dimensional incarnation.
Through my work I attempt to bridge the inherent rift between humans and the world around us in our relentless search for a place between the atoms and the stars. I use the language of plasticity in the creation of objects capable of storing and radiating spiritual energy.
The techniques, methods and processes I employ are a function of my personal philosophy and value system and are also a reflection of the forces in my ambiance. These forces coupled with the powers of intuition, intellect and emotion form the nucleus of my work.
